Lions Municipal Golf Course

Lions Municipal Golf Course, located in Austin, TX, has been a popular spot for golfers since it opened in 1924. The course was originally nine holes, but was expanded to 18 later on. The course got its name from the Lions Club, who leased the land from UT and converted it into a public golf course. In 1936, the lease was transferred to the city, but the course kept its name.

Many notable golfers have played at Lions Municipal, including Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sandra Haynie, Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw. It also hosts Texas’ oldest amateur tournament, the Firecracker Open.

Lions Municipal has been recognized by various organizations for its historical significance. It was selected by the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and added to the Texas Registry of Historic Golf Courses. It is also listed on the Registration of National Historical Places by the National Park Service and is recognized as one of the first courses in the South to desegregate prior to the Supreme Court decision in Brown V. Board of Education in 1954.

While Lions Municipal has changed over the years, it remains a favorite among Austin’s golfing community.
