Introduction to Chemical Peels

At Personqiue On The Spot in Austin, Chemical Peels are one of our most popular skin treatments. Over time, your skin loses its glow, its youthful appearance, and elasticity. This is part of the natural aging process, but there is no need for you to suffer the effects of time’s passage. Chemical peels can help you rejuvenate the skin on your face, and over other areas of your body, offering a more youthful appearance, and the deep, healthy glow that you deserve.

What are Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel is a topical solution made up of different chemicals, specifically combined to deliver the results you would like to see. Unlike many cosmetic treatments, the chemical peel does not hide behind its name. It does exactly as it implies. A chemical peel peels away layers of this skin. While that might sound a bit scary, if you understand the science behind it, it makes a little more sense.

Chemical peels work by taking advantage of the body’s natural biological process that is continually at work. We are constantly shedding our skin, even if we don’t realize it. We shed our entire skin about once a month as the body makes new skin cells to replace the older, damaged ones.

The oldest and most damaged cells form the topmost layer of skin – the most visible layer. Beneath this layer are younger, healthier cells. The deeper you go, the younger and healthier these cells are. At Personique, we offer 3 levels of a Chemical Peel:

Light chemical peel: A superficial chemical peel that removes the outer layer of skin. It’s used to treat fine wrinkles, acne, uneven skin tone, and dryness. Typically done every 2 – 5 weeks.

Medium chemical peel: Removes skin cells from the epidermis and portions of the upper part of your middle layer of skin (dermis) and is used to treat wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin tone. You might need to repeat the procedure to achieve or maintain the desired result.

Deep chemical peel: Provides an even deeper treatment and is used for deeper wrinkles, scars, or precancerous growths. You won’t need to repeat procedures to get the full effect.

The natural skin-shedding process occurs constantly – your body sheds old skin cells all the time. These cells are replaced by newer, younger cells from the layer of skin underneath the old ones.

A chemical peel essentially supercharges this process by accelerating the removal of the outermost layers of skin and promoting new cell growth. The acids within the peel work to chemically loosen the “glue” that binds the dead and damaged cells, activating the exfoliation process and allowing healthier skin cells to surface.

The result? Younger, healthier, glowing skin with fewer wrinkles and signs of aging.

What’s the First Step?

The first step in getting a Chemical Peel in Austin, TX is to contact our office and schedule your consultation. When you come in for this appointment, your technician will examine your skin, answer your questions about the Chemical Peel process, and listen to your desires for the treatment. Once the 2 of you agree on their diagnosis, you can schedule your appointment with our Patient Coordinator. You will also be provided with a cost breakdown of the treatment as well as any instructions you may need to follow before getting your Chemical Peel.

What to Expect on the Day of Chemical Peels

Before the procedure, your face will be cleaned, your hair is protected, and your eyes will be covered with ointment, gauze, tape, or goggles. Although lighter chemical peels won’t need any sort of pain relief, if you’re having a medium peel done, you can request a mild sedative or painkiller to ease your discomfort. If you’re getting a deep peel, a numbing agent will be applied to the treated area, you will be given a sedative, and have the option of fluids being delivered through a vein. Each chemical peel may be slightly different, but should be similar to the following experiences:

Light Chemical Peel

The technician will begin by using a brush, cotton ball, gauze, or sponge to apply a chemical solution typically containing glycolic acid or salicylic acid, causing your skin to whiten. There may be a mild stinging sensation where the chemical solution was applied. After a few minutes, a neutralizing solution or wash is used to remove the chemical solution from the treated skin.

Medium Chemical Peel

A cotton-tipped applicator or gauze is used to apply the chemical solution (which contains trichloroacetic acid, sometimes in combination with glycolic acid), and your treated skin will begin to whiten. The technician will apply cool compresses to soothe treated skin after a few minutes and you may be given a hand-held fan to help cool your skin. When getting a Medium Chemical Peel, no neutralizing solution is needed. Most patients tend to feel stinging and burning for up to 20 minutes.

Deep Chemical Peel

You’ll begin by being given intravenous (IV) fluids and your heart rate will be closely monitored. Next, a cotton-tipped applicator is again used to apply carbolic acid (phenol) to your skin, which will turn your skin either white or gray. To limit your exposure to phenol, your doctor will do the procedure in portions at about 15-minute intervals. A full-facial procedure might take about 90 minutes.

Chemical Peels Recovery

No matter the depth of your chemical peel, your skin will be red, tight, irritated, and possibly swollen. You should always protect your skin from the sun, and routinely clean, moisturize, and apply protective ointments to the treated area. Always avoid picking, rubbing, or scratching your skin, especially during the healing process. You may require several months for your skin color to return to normal, allowing you to see the full results of the peel.

After a light chemical peel, you are usually able to wear makeup the next day if you wish.
Treated areas take about one to seven days to heal after a light chemical peel. New skin might temporarily be lighter or darker than normal.

After a medium chemical peel, you can use cosmetics to cover any redness after 5 to 7 days. You can use ice packs to aid your comfort level along with taking over-the-counter pain-relieving medication. You’ll likely schedule a checkup soon after your treatment so that your doctor can monitor your healing. When the swelling decreases, your treated skin will form a crust and could darken or develop brown blotches, but should return to normal after a few months.

When you’re finished with a deep chemical peel, you should expect to experience severe redness, swelling, burning, and throbbing. Although it’s not as common, sometimes the swelling may make your eyelids swell shut. You will have a surgical dressing applied to the treated area for additional protection. You will need to soak the affected skin and apply ointment several times a day for the next few weeks.

During this time, the treated areas will develop new skin within about two weeks after a deep chemical peel, although redness might last for months. Treated skin might become darker or lighter than normal or lose the ability to tan.

While you don’t have to, you might consider remaining at home while you’re healing, especially from a deeper chemical peel. You will need to return for several follow-up visits so that we can monitor your healing progress. You can use cosmetics after about 2 weeks to conceal any redness, but you should wear sunscreen every day following your treatment.
